Role summary:

Reporting to the VP Finance & Operations, the Accountant is responsible for full cycle accounting and for ensuring compliance with statutory reporting requirements.

The Accountant posts financial transactions to the general ledger, performs the bank and credit card reconciliations, is responsible for payroll and bill payments, prepares PST and GST tax filings, and performs month-end close procedures, as well as, other duties related to finance and administration, as needed.

Decisions are made on the outcome of their work therefore completeness, accuracy and attention to detail are critical to ensure the efficient and timely flow of financial information to financial reports.

Key accountabilities:

• Issues vendor payments and runs payroll for hourly and salary employees, on-time, every time.
• Files GST, PST and other statutory reporting.
• Maintains and updates accounting records and files; Posts transactions and categorizes records in the general ledger (e.g. by Program (Class) as well as by assets, liabilities, revenues and expenses (including allocating payroll by program)).
• Prepare and distribute Monthly and Quarterly Actual vs. Budget reporting by Program; as well as analyzing revenues, expenses, assets and liabilities to explain variances (year over year and budget to actual)
• Reviews and confirms accuracy of employee T4s with 3rd party payroll provider
• Conducts month-, quarter-, and year-end close procedures.
• Provides information to auditors for year-end audit, T3010 charity return, and ad hoc grant audits
• Applies new accounting policies to ensure compliance with all applicable rules and regulations
• Identifies new initiatives and makes recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of financial systems and processes, and assists VP in implementation
• Advises staff with financial issues as they arise, and ad hoc reporting and analysis, as requested
• Leads or participates in other approved initiatives or other projects as requested by the Foundation
• Prepares reconciliations and reports for the VP Finance & Operations, CEO, and external auditors including documenting evidence to support all reconciliations/reports

Qualifications:

• Candidate has an Accounting designation/degree/diploma, with a minimum of two (2) years recent related experience.
• Advanced knowledge of Quickbooks, Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word), required; Payworks and Salesforce experience an asset.
• Strong organization skills with the ability to focus and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
• Attention to detail, with demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
• Self-motivated, with demonstrated ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team.
• Optimistic, collaborative team player with a “can-do” attitude; strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate; communicates effectively, positively and skillfully with individuals at all levels.
