Golder has a new opportunity for an Designer II to join our Calgary team on a full-time basis based in Calgary, AB.

The Designer II position consult and partner with engineers on projects with small to medium scope of work and moderate complexity to build detailed designs, redesigns, and edits on engineering projects and change orders, working from sketches, key plans, and verbal instructions to produce the final design.

The position develops specialty working with 3D modelling applications in a design/construction environment to provide solutions. The position also assists senior staff in carrying out technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations and completeness of data and adherence to prescribed analysis, design or computational methods.

An overview of your role will include:

• Data Application

• Review databases, sequences, and descriptors to identify data issues for project engineers.
• Read, interpret, and utilize topographic survey data, survey field notes, and engineering designs.
• Perform complex calculations, apply results to design for optimum results, and identify potential issues with the surface.

• Design

• Design 3D alignments, profiles, and models/objects using multiple datasets to assist engineers with analysis of proposed designs.
• Create drawings from scratch using field notes/client data.
• Edit existing drawings and input field notes into drawing base plans for proposals, reports and presentations.
• Work with the lead the drafting component on small/medium projects by understanding the correlation between drawings and resourcing CAD technicians to assist with completing project deliverable.
• Adhere to appropriate standards and procedures to ensure quality of results.
• Responsible for and demonstrates efficiencies in quality assurance and control.
• Maintain and follow simple data management protocol.

• Teamwork, Mentorship and Supervision

• Supervision and training of junior employees.
• Carry out drafting work under the direction of more experienced Golder employees.
• Communicate availability to the team to seek work or assist other team members.
• Responsible for adhering to project timelines, quality and budget.
• Work with and support other Golder employees in the field or office.

• Commerciality

• Proactively engage with internal clients, with supervisor oversight in broader work contexts, concerning project budget, scope and requirements to develop loyal client relationships.
• Commencing limited communication with external clients with supervision in areas of discipline.

You will have a background in:

• Required: technical diploma or certificate in relevant discipline. (discipline specific certification and/or accreditation may be added here).
• Required: minimum 6 years of relevant experience.
• Required: well developed general technical skills with efficient and more advanced use of related software applications.
• Required: understanding design criteria and 3D modelling, with a demonstratable high proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D. Additional 3D and/or analytical ground engineering software experience is to be considered an asset.
