Job Description

We are looking for an engineer, technologist or scientist who wants to get a wide range of experience, and loves learning about physics, materials, chemistry, polymers, software and hardware through a hands-on approach. This individual should:

  • Thrive working in a small, fast-paced team making substantial contributions to the success of their projects
  • Be a generalist who can quickly learn and is willing and able to dive deep when necessary, specializing in specific topics as required
  • Be able to take a step back and manage a wide variety of tasks across different disciplines
  • Be good at collaborating with research scientists, engineers and specialists across different disciplines to drive cross-functional project development
  • Have a strong understanding of basic principles in mechanical engineering, materials chemistry, electronics, prototyping and microcontrollers.
  • Be comfortable working through problems with minimal supervision

At Halion you will play an integral role in R&D and product development, ranging from small sample development and testing to building, assembling, and integrating Halion’s technology with other products.

We are a startup, so we’re pretty relaxed about working hours, dress code, etc. We have heard that some candidates think “this sounds like a great place to work but there’s no way I’m qualified…” – we are looking for good people, not just good experience! If your skills roughly align with what we’ve listed below, and you like the cut of our jib, give it a shot.

Perks

  • Employee benefits program (dental, vision, etc.)
  • Free coffee
  • Flexible work hours
  • Control over your own project with a large impact on the final product
  • 3 weeks vacation

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing development of prototypes, samples and products, including projects related to integration of our technology into devices.
  • Work closely with customers to develop and test samples, prototypes, PoCs, and integrate our materials into their product(s)
  • Perform mechanical, electrical and industrial design of new products from concept to production
  • Perform hands-on testing and validation of new designs and prototypes
  • Assist in sourcing and specifying third-party hardware, materials and components
  • Provide complex design reviews and feedback for improvement in manufacturability, helping transfer the technology from lab-scale development to commercial-scale production
  • Write technical reports and SOPs
  • Effectively communicate project updates, difficulties and plans to team members
  • Train co-op students, contractors or other personnel; may supervise interns

Minimum qualifications:

  • BS or BASc in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 4 weeks/yr
  • Able to legally work in Canada
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills are required

Assets:

  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects and changing priorities, make sound decisions under pressure, and work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to rapidly learn new systems and procedures
  • Experience working on challenging projects in a development environment. Ability to learn from failure and move on quickly to new strategies
  • Hands-on experience with building prototypes including but not limited to selecting and programming microcontrollers, 3D printing, and designing and assembling circuits
  • Fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering, electronics, and materials science
  • Experience with machining tools such as drills, saws, laser cutters, etc.
  • Experience handling thin films and roll-to-roll production.

Instructions to apply:

Do you want to be the very best [candidate], like no-one ever was? If so, please demonstrate the following in your cover letter and resume:

  • You have a bias for action (but you think before you act).
  • You enjoy working on personal projects not related to work (but you know how to manage your priorities).
  • You like technology – past, present and future.
  • You love learning new things, do so quickly, and can easily connect concepts from different fields.
  • You will use the word skedaddle as naturally as possible in your application, so I know that you read this.
  • You like to solve problems, especially using your creativity and imagination.
  • You thrive in ambiguous environments that enable you to be creative.
  • Failure does not deter you from trying harder but you also know when to give up.
  • You derive your self worth from the effort you put in, and not from your successes or failures.
  • You are constantly working to experiment and improve yourself, because nobody is perfect.
  • An enjoyment of Star Wars is an asset. Bonus points if you can make a good Wookiee sound.

Our interview process will include up to 3 interviews and reference checks where applicable.
